Food and Hunger

Hunger is a silent boss

Plenty of 100 Days on Chunk wipes get blamed on zombies, hunters, or a bad boss pull. Plenty of those wipes started earlier—when someone expanded a legendary-looking pad on an empty stomach, fought on the rim too hungry to think, or watched the meter hit zero mid-kite. Hunger ends runs. Cooking is not a side hobby; it is infrastructure.

This guide covers why hunger kills, how to cook early, when to stock before nights and exploration, and how Chef’s 30% slower hunger drain changes the math. Pair it with Getting Started, class picks on All Classes, and the class tier list.

Why the meter matters more on a chunk

Floating biomes punish distraction:

  • Low hunger stacks with void-camera mistakes
  • Long quarry or desert sweeps without a cooked stack turn into corpse runs
  • Night lock means you cannot casually remodel a kitchen mid-wave
  • Day multipliers compress gather windows, so thin food reserves fail faster (Day Multipliers and Totems)

Treat food like wall HP. If either is empty, stop crafting vanity islands.

Cook early — Day 1 habits

On the starter pad:

  1. Gather obvious food nodes before a sightseeing lap of the void rim
  2. Place a campfire or cooking station as a top building priority (Crafting and Buildings)
  3. Cook a small stack before your first long mining loop
  4. Put extras in an inward chest, not on the scenic edge
  5. Keep a hotbar snack for emergencies without carrying your entire pantry into a fight

Raw panic eating mid-raid is better than dying empty, but planned cooked stacks are how you stop panicking.

Stock before nights and exploration

Before night

  • Confirm cooked food in storage and on key defenders
  • Repair walls first, then snack—do not AFK at the fire while seams are open
  • Accept that night building lock means the kitchen you have is the kitchen you defend with

Before exploration / new chunks

  • Eat up, then craft or cross into forest, quarry, or desert pads (Chunk Types and Rarities)
  • Bring enough to clear the chunk fully—piles, chests, crates—without a hunger emergency on the rim
  • Deposit Bones and Artifacts home before you get greedy on a second island (How to Get Bones, How to Get Artifact)

Before bosses

  • Stage food next to the arena path, inside walls
  • Assign a co-op eater schedule if the fight is long—starving DPS still drop
  • Do not open a boss chunk “real quick” between meals

Chef — 30% slower hunger drain

Chef costs 75 Gems and slows hunger drain by 30%. That is one of the best early quality-of-life spends if your wipes look like:

  • Dying on Night 2 with weapons fine but meter empty
  • Aborting quarry clears to sprint home starving
  • Skipping cooks because “I will eat after one more chunk”

Chef does not replace cooking. It gives you a wider mistake window. Explorer can absolutely manage with discipline; Chef makes discipline easier while you learn. Farm the Gems via badges, biome crates, and run payouts—How to Farm Gems—and remember codes are inactive as of October 2026 (Codes Hub).

Other classes and hunger

  • Explorer (free) — No hunger perk; win with habits.
  • Medic (75 Gems) — Helps after fights; bandages are not food. Track both meters.
  • Lumberjack / Ninja / Vampire / Engineer — Still eat. Combat or craft power does not fill the bar.
  • Vampire especially tempts players to greed fights; pack meat and cooked reserves anyway so the 300 Gem spend is not wasted on a hunger wipe.

Kitchen placement that survives raids

  • Keep cooking inside the walled core near storage
  • Avoid rim barbecues that double as void dive platforms
  • Rebuild cooking quickly if a storm or bad demolish removes it
  • In public lobbies, do not scrap the only fire for a meme build mid-run

When day multipliers go down, shorter days mean fewer second chances to recook—protect the station like you protect the totem.

A simple food loop for every day

  1. Dawn — eat, check chest counts, cook if low
  2. Work block — gather/craft with a snack reserved
  3. Midday — top off after a chunk sweep; deposit loot
  4. Late day — restock before night lock; stop new expansions if food is thin
  5. Night — defend; eat between waves on the walled pad, not on the bridge

Repeat until Day 100 pacing in Survive 100 Days feels natural.

Hunger mistakes that look like “skill issues”

  • Expanding three chunks before placing a fire
  • Leaving all food in a rim chest that falls during a breach
  • Buying Vampire while still refusing to cook on Explorer
  • Starting desert Artifact routes starving “for efficiency”
  • Placing a day multiplier with a nearly empty pantry
  • Blaming codes for food—promos are inactive anyway (Codes Hub)

Cook on Day 1, stock before dark and before every sweep, spend 75 Gems on Chef if the meter keeps beating you, and never let hunger turn a winnable night into a void highlight. Eat, then expand.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Why do I keep dying even when zombies feel easy?

Check hunger. Empty meters cause void mistakes and aborted clears. Cook early and stock chests before nights—see Getting Started.

Is Chef worth 75 Gems?

Yes if hunger wipes you. Chef slows drain by 30%. It helps learning; it does not replace cooking. Compare options on the class tier list.

When should I cook relative to expanding?

Cook and bank food before attaching new chunks or entering quarry/desert sweeps. Expand only when the pantry supports the longer perimeter.

Do combat classes ignore hunger?

No. Ninja, Vampire, and Engineer still need cooked food. Pack reserves before bosses and accelerated multiplier nights.
