Crafting and Buildings

Build on the clock, not on vibes

100 Days on Chunk splits your life into two modes: daytime crafting and construction, and nighttime defense when ambitious building locks down. Players who treat the island like a sandbox creative server discover the hard way that unfinished walls become zombie doors and that a lightning rod in the lobby center invites disaster.

This guide covers the day/night building rule, wall-first priorities, chunk craft expansion, storage layout, campfire/cooking stations, Engineer crafting discounts, and safe lightning rod placement. Use it with Getting Started, Chunk Types and Rarities, and Food and Hunger.

Day versus night building lock

Day is when you:

  • Gather and craft tools, walls, and furniture
  • Attach new biome chunks
  • Remodel floors, gates, and kite corridors
  • Place or relocate lightning rods and storage

Night is when you:

  • Defend instead of expanding
  • Accept that unfinished projects stay unfinished until dawn
  • Fight on prepared paths, not mid-scaffold death traps

If the sky is turning and you are halfway through a legendary quarry seam, stop decorating and close the wall. The game will not pause the wave so you can finish a balcony.

Walls first — always

Ego towers look great in clips and do nothing if the rim is open. Early-to-mid priorities:

  1. Seal spawn-facing and void-facing edges you actually walk
  2. Add height where melee paths climb onto the main pad
  3. Keep one gated entrance you can hold without trapping the whole team
  4. Repair before dusk; night lock means you live with whatever you left broken
  5. Expand only as fast as you can wall the new seam the same day

Co-op tip: assign a “wall closer” when someone crafts a chunk so the placer is not also the only defender.

Chunk craft expansion as a building system

Crafting a new chunk is a building event, not just a loot roll. Each attach:

  • Adds perimeter length you must defend
  • Creates seam gaps until you rail them
  • Moves “center” relative to old lightning rods and storage
  • Changes kite routes overnight

Smart expansion checklist (daylight):

  1. Confirm mats and recipe (common / epic / legendary goals per Chunk Types and Rarities)
  2. Clear inventory space for the sweep
  3. Place chunk where you can wall it before night
  4. Sweep nodes, bone piles, and chests immediately
  5. Deposit Bones/Artifacts into safe storage (How to Get Bones, How to Get Artifact)
  6. Re-check rod positions so yesterday’s edge is not today’s core

Boss chunks are crafts with combat consequences—do not open one as a casual afternoon remodel. Prep via Bosses and Raids.

Storage that survives a breach

A pretty base with chests on the rim is a donation to the void. Storage rules:

  • Keep core chests inward behind walls
  • Separate mental piles: food, Bones/boss mats, building mats, junk
  • Do not leave boss keys or totems in hotbar fashion on skybridges—see Day Multipliers and Totems
  • After deaths, recover toward storage, not toward the scenic overlook
  • In public lobbies, label intent in chat so teammates do not craft away your last Bones

When a raid breaches, you want repairs and cooked food two steps away—not a parkour route across three unfinished islands.

Campfires and cooking stations

Hunger is a run killer. Building a fire and cooking early is part of base priority, not a luxury after the mega-wall:

  • Place cooking where defenders can eat between waves without leaving the walled pad
  • Stock chests with cooked reserves before long exploration or boss attempts
  • Rebuild cooking quickly after storms or dumb demolitions—do not “borrow” the only fire for a vanity project

Chef’s 30% slower hunger drain makes the same kitchen safer, but Explorer still wins with discipline. Full food tactics: Food and Hunger.

Lightning rods — attract lightning off-center

Lightning rods attract lightning. Use them to pull strikes away from what you cannot afford to lose:

  • Place on outer pads or deliberate strike zones
  • Never center a rod on the main workshop, totem room, or primary storage cluster
  • Reposition after big expansions; wrapped islands turn old edges into new middles
  • Install in daylight with a plan—not as a panic drop beside the day-multiplier totem

If your “protection” rod is the reason the totem room exploded, it was not protection.

Engineer and other class build perks

  • Engineer (399 Robux) — Crafting discount / cheaper requirements plus extra crossbow utility. Faster into walls, tools, and chunk recipes when Robux is on the table.
  • Lumberjack (150 Gems) — Speeds wood-fed expansion so you can afford more daylight crafts.
  • Explorer (free) — Enough to learn; just be thorough and wall-obsessed.
  • Chef / Medic (75 Gems) — Soften hunger or healing while you practice build discipline.
  • Ninja / Vampire — Help hold nights so your daytime builds survive to matter.

Compare spend order on the class tier list and All Classes. Farm currency via How to Farm Gems; do not wait on codes—inactive as of October 2026 on the Codes Hub.

Sample day build schedule

  1. Dawn — eat, repair critical walls, check food chest
  2. Early day — one focused craft (chunk, wall segment, or tool upgrade)
  3. Mid day — sweep new land; deposit Bones/Artifacts; adjust rods if the footprint moved
  4. Late day — stop new islands; close seams; restock cooking; stage weapons
  5. Night — defend the plan you already finished

Repeat. The players who reach Day 100 treat building like a checklist, not a mood.

Common building mistakes

  • Starting a second chunk while the first seam is open
  • Decorating roofs before closing ground edges
  • Centering lightning rods
  • Storing boss mats on the rim
  • Ignoring cooking until someone is already starving mid-expand
  • Fighting on unfinished scaffolds after night lock

Craft in daylight, wall before you flex, store inward, cook always, and keep lightning on the edge. That is the building loop that survives to Day 100.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Can I build at night in 100 Days on Chunk?

Major building locks at night. Finish walls, chunk seams, and rod moves in daylight, then defend after dark.

What should I build first on a new chunk?

Close the wall seam first, then sweep loot into inward storage. Decoration wait until the perimeter is safe.

Where do I place lightning rods?

On outer positions. Rods attract lightning—never put them in the center of your base, workshop, or totem room.

Does Engineer help with crafting?

Yes. Engineer costs 399 Robux and eases crafting requirements so walls, tools, and chunk recipes come online sooner—see All Classes.
